This is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the language.  Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication and comprehension.  Customs and cultural insights are also presented.

This course is continuation of ARBC 1010.

Prerequisite: Arabic 2040 or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.

This course is continuation of ARBC 2040.

ARBC 3040 Culture and History of the Middle East

Prerequisite: Arabic 2050 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.

The primary purpose of this course is to explore the history and culture of the Near East, from the time of Muhammad to the present. It will examine the rise and definition of Islamic civilization and the spread of Islam into virtually every corner of the Old World. Topics will include major political figures and historical events, institutions, economic developments, social issues (education, family, women), history of ideas, literary movements, art history, and music history. Lectures and discussions will be supplemented by readings and video and audio materials. By the end of the semester is over, students are expected to have a sound understanding of Islam, the role of Islamic civilization in world history, the roots of the current Islamist revival, as well as a solid grasp of the Arabic culture.

ARBC 3060 Advanced Topics in Arabic

Prerequisite: Arabic 2050 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.

The objective of Advanced Arabic is to continue the students' development of the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing Modern Standard Arabic. This course also aims at providing a thorough study of authentic materials in classical prose to create a foundation for the mastery of classical Arabic. The course will also involve more extended readings and discussions of contemporary and historical cultural topics. In addition to a review of syntax and morphology, the course intends to increase the range and accuracy of oral and written expression and aural comprehension. Classes will be conducted entirely in Arabic.

ARBC 4900 Special Topics in Arabic

Topics vary.

NOTE: Students who are already proficient in Arabic may test out of Beginning and Intermediate Arabic, for a total of 14 credit hours. We hope to offer a minor in Arabic, and completing Arabic 1010, 1020, 2040, 2050, and two courses of Advanced Arabic (for a total of 18 credits) would eventually satisfy a requirement for a minor in Arabic.
