Virtual French Network - UNT & Université de Technologie de Troyes

This is an on-line intercultural communication project with the Université de Technologie de Troyes.

For questions and comments, please contact Lawrence Williams, lawrence.williams@unt.edu.

Students in selected sections of FREN 1020 and FREN 2050 from the University of North Texas will meet in these rooms on a regularly scheduled basis. Instructors will provide topics for you to discuss in French, and when students from Troyes happen to be in your room, the discussion can be in English since the students from Troyes would like to have opportunities to use English. If students from Troyes are in the room for the entire session, you should divide the time between English and French.

Some topics will be posted on line (link will be here when there are topics available). However, for some sessions, your instructors will give you the topic in class instead of having it posted on this Web site.

You will find your name and your chat room number in one of the charts below.

The first two charts are for North Texas students in FREN 1020 (Instructor: Grall).

The other two charts are for North Texas students in FREN 2050 (Instructor: van Compernolle).

Students from the Université de Technologie de Troyes can visit any room.

However, it would be best for the students from France to avoid going to the same room where there are already other students from France. Try to find a room with no other students from Troyes if possible or try to keep the distribution even among the rooms.

Each chat room has its own web address. The links to the chat rooms can be found at the bottom of this page.

Important: The first person (from UNT) who arrives in every room needs to copy the transcript at the end of the chat session and paste it in a Word document, then send it to lawrence.williams@unt.edu. Attendance and participation grades will be taken from the transcripts this way because the Live Classroom archiving function cannot be activated in all the rooms at the beginning of each session. In order to copy the transcript of the chat session, click once somewhere on the text of the chat session, then press CTRL and the 'a' key in order to select all. Then press CTRL and the 'c' key in order to copy the entire text of the chat session. After you have done these two operations, the text of the entire chat should be on the clipboard, and you can paste it into an e-mail or a Word document and send it to me.

Links to chat rooms

These chat rooms/Web sites use Java, and that is why you will see a link called "Run Wizard". The wizard is on-line software that will check your computer to make sure that Java is properly installed and working. If you know that your Java works, or if you have already used the wizard, you can click directly on the link called "click here (to enter)".

You will certainly notice that the display area for text in the chat window is not very big. Unfortunately, this is how the software was developed. It seems to be set that way and cannot be changed. However, if you miss something and want to see it or read it again, you can scroll up to view what was typed previously.

When you choose your screen name, please use some form of your first and/or last name so that your instructor can identify you when he/she reads the transcripts of the chat sessions.

Have you checked the list of names and rooms?

Since these links are available on a public web site, and a user name and password are not required, there should be no expectation of privacy on the part of anyone who decides to enter these chat rooms. If anything from the archives of these chat rooms is used for research (such as conference presentations or journal articles), no real names or references to real names will be used.
