ITALIAN at the University of North Texas

Minor in Italian

The minor in Italian is a six-semester program of study. In the first year, students generally take elementary Italian language courses (Italian 1010-1020). In the second year of study, students have two options. They may either continue to finish their language requirement by taking Intermediate Italian (Italian 2040-2050) and then take the courses in Italian culture and literature the following year, or they may also take all four courses simultaneously and complete the minor in two years.

Departmental Examination

Prior to enrollment in a foreign language course, a student who has earned high school credit for foreign language or who has acquired language skills will be required to take an examination to determine appropriate enrollment. Based on the results of the examination and if credit is desired, the student will pay a fee for the posting of 4-14 hours of credit corresponding to credit earned in courses 1010-2050. Students will be required to enroll for their first language course at UNT according to the course level indicated by the results of the examination. Any questions should be directed to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. For graduate students, there is also the possibility of receiving credit by taking a translation exam. Please note--after having taken any level of Italian for credit at UNT, you are no longer eligible to take the placement exam to receive further credit.
