The Japanese program at UNT currently includes three years of Japanese language training and the chance to study abroad. The program is complemented by additional Asian Studies coursework in the history and political science departments. Extracurricular activites include monthly film screenings, a conversation partner program with Japanese native speakers, and a weekly conversation hour for intermediate and advanced students.
Course Offerings
Elementary Japanese (1010 & 1020)
Introductory courses for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Covers basic vocabulary and grammar as well as the writing systems. Culture is also integrated. The textbook used is Nakama 1.
Intermediate Japanese (2040 & 2050)
Expands on the basic level skills, building grammar and vocabulary as well as reading and writing skills. The textbook used is Nakama 2.
Advanced Japanese (3040 & 3060)
3060, Advanced Topics in Language, is taught in the Fall as the completion of the intermediate level textbook (Nakama 2). Grammar, vocabulary, and kanji are continued to be developed.
3040, Advanced Topics in Culture, is taught in the Spring. Japanese cultural topics are discussed in Japanese in this course.
The Minor in Japanese
By completing all six Japanese courses, you can earn a minor in Japanese. This minor is valuable for students in international business, political science, the arts, and many other fields.

Study Abroad
Study abroad is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain fluency in Japanese and experience Japanese culture firsthand. UNT has a direct exchange program with Kansai Gaidai University (ouside of Osaka ), enabling students to pay UNT tuition and transfer credits back to UNT. Homestays are available through this program. UNT can also help you arrange exchanges with other universities in other cities.
