Welcome to the Portuguese web page at the University of North Texas.
The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures is pleased to announce that Portuguese will be offered beginning in the Fall 2008 semester.
Bem-vindos!
Welcome!
Why study Portuguese?
-
Portuguese is the mother tongue of more than 200 million people in four continents, offering you instant entry to Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guiné Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe, Macau, East Timor and Goa. It is the 7th most widely spoken language in the world.
-
Portuguese is one of the official languages of the European union.
-
Portuguese is a Romance language. Spanish, Italian and French speakers in particular will discover the same language structure.
-
Portuguese is relatively easy for Spanish-speakers to learn (although this does not mean the languages are the same or that you won't need to study!). With a combination of Portuguese and Spanish, Latin American Studies students can have an added advantage as candidates for employment or graduate studies.
-
Portuguese fits in extremely well with many other subjects: International Studies, French Studies, English, History, Geography, West African Studies, History of Art, Sociology, Political Science, and more.
-
Portuguese is considered increasingly essential for business, study, and travel in Latin America.
