Policy changes taking effect in Fall 2007 (PDF format)
1. In order to receive a minor in French, German or Spanish, a student only has to take two (6 hours) upper level classes (3000) past 2050. I recommend that these students come by my office (LANG 101-F) in order to find out what classes are best for them after 2050 and for me to add the minor to their records in EIS. Although we don't have a "form" to fill out to declare a minor, I want students to let their major advisor know that they have a minor in French, German, Spanish, etc.
2. A score of 3 or better on the AP foreign language exam will give a student 14 credit hours (all 4 beginning and intermediate semesters). UNT does not give credit for passing the AP Literature exam.
3. We do not offer upper level foreign language classes in the summer (only beginning and intermediate). If you are interested in receiving upper-level credits, you may register for a Study Abroad program.
4. For study abroad programs, typically you must first go to the Study Abroad Office in Information Sciences Building, room 206, and there you can get a pre-approval form and speak with the Director, Mary Beth Butler, or the Assistant Director, Valerie Borgfield (940) 565-2207.
5. In order to major in a foreign language, a student must take eight (24 hours) upper level classes past 2050. Out of these eight classes at least two must be at the 4000 level.
6. A foreign language major can transfer in to UNT up to four advanced level classes (12 hours) at another four-year university (first being approved by College of Arts & Sciences and our department) or a pre-approved study abroad program.
7. For students who are native speakers of a language that is not offered in our department. they will need to first contact our office in order to find out if we have a professor (who is a native speaker of that language and teaches here at UNT or in the DFW area) on our list that will test their proficiency. If we do not have an instructor on our list that can assist them, then they must find a native speaker of professorial rank at another university or community college who will agree to test them. For the proficiency test, the instructor must e-mail Ms. Connie Martinez [connie.martinez@unt.edu] in order to get the necessary form to fill out after giving the test. After testing the student (in all four skill areas: listening, speaking, reading & writing - they can have the student read a passage in the language, answer questions about it and give a writing sample in the language), the instructor must send back the completed form, making sure to include the student's UNT ID # and or Social Security Number and their major to our office. Students taking Proficiency Exams should be aware that they will not receive credit hours, they will only be listed as "fulfilling" the foreign language requirement. So, if they want or need the 6 necessary credit hours, then they would have to take additional classes.
8. The CLEP exam is an option for earning credit (in a few foreign languages), but it is either scored as passing beginning 1 & 2 classes or all 4 classes.
9. Our department placement exam allows students (who have not previously earned college credit for foreign language) to earn anywhere from 4 (1010), 8 (1010 & 1020), 11 (1010, 1020 & 2040), up to 14 (1010, 1020, 2040 &2050) credit hours. A student can only take the department placement test one time. Students must show up fifteen minutes prior to the test and show their UNT ID. Students can call the main office to find out the test times and dates.
10. Students must show proof of prerequisite for all classes through 2050 the first ten days of class each semester. They can present their instructor with a grade report, a placement exam form, or a transcript copied in the FLLC computer lab.
