PURPOSES
To develop
an appreciation of a rich national tradition of filmmaking by presenting
a diverse selection of past or current, classic or avant-garde, popular
or experimental, entertaining or challenging films.
- The
course will include films involving various aspects of French culture
and history: A Very Long Engagement, Camille Claudel.
- The
selection of films will include film adaptations of works from French
literature: Cyrano de Bergerac, The Horseman on the Roof.
- This
course will include a survey of French film classics. The emphasis will
be on the French Nouvelle Vague of the 1950s -1960s : François TRUFFAUT
and Jean-Luc GODARD.
- The film
selection will present new trends in current French cinema : films by
Laetitia COLOMBANI, Jean-Pierre JEUNET, Cédric KLAPISCH, Jacques AUDIARD.
LANGUAGE
ACQUISITION
-
Introduction to specific vocabulary related to film (camera, editing
techniques, and musical soundtracks, etc).
- Specific
language acquisition related to the films studied and the art of
filmmaking will be a major component of this course.
- Oral and
written proficiency will be developed and tested through various
activities : class and group discussion, written questions on films
(weekly), oral presentation, rewriting term paper.
METHOD
The course
will be conducted in French. All films are in French with English
subtitles. Discussion
of the selected films with emphasis on how each work contributes to the
development of a national tradition and reflects important issues in
French culture.

minimum). The film discussed in this essay must be different from the
one you will present in class.
